V8 Supercars: Sydney 500 Street Race Promo On Sydney Harbour Bridge

irwin-racing_sydney-harbour-bridge

Alex Davison joined a contingent of V8 Supercar drivers crossing the ‘coat-hanger’ to promote the first Telstra Sydney 500 Street Race, to take place from 4-6 December this year.

Driving his IRWIN Stone Brothers Racing Falcon, Davison and five other V8 drivers gave commuters crossing the Harbour Bridge at least six reasons for a ‘double-take’ in the rear view mirrors - it’s not often you can share lanes with a V8 Supercar.

V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP WINTON

The drive was part of the launch festivities for the event which has been put together by V8 Supercars Australia and the New South Wales Government and is to be run on a street course around the 2000 Olympic Games site in Homebush.

“For IRWIN Industrial Tools, Stone Brothers Racing and I - that certainly was an outstanding moment,” Davison said.

“It is very rare that V8 Supercars actually drive on public roads, let alone drive across one of the most recognisable landmarks anywhere in the world!”

V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP WINTON Davison said the entourage got “plenty of thumbs-up from people in cars, trucks, busses, trains and even pedestrians”.

The Telstra Sydney 500 will run from 4-6 December. Everybody loves a street race; the Sydney 500 will be one to circle in the calendar.

F1: Ferrari Lodges Injunction To Stop Budget Cap

f1_ferrari_spain_qualifying_kimi-raikonen_2009_01

The standoff between Ferrari and the FIA has intensified after the Italian outfit lodged an injunction in the French courts to stop the planned introduction of a budget cap for next season.

Ferrari claims the decision to hasten through the new regulations last month breaches an agreement signed in 2005 handing the Scuderia power to veto any rule changes until 2012.

This development comes after the latest round of emergency talks between the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and the FIA failed to yield a compromise agreement ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

With the 2010 entry deadline fast approaching, FOTA is under pressure to develop a viable alternative to the cost-cutting measures set to be imposed by the FIA.

But Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes the teams are closing in on a proposal that will satisfy FIA President Max Mosley and bring an end to the crisis.

“I think that the meeting shows that on one side there is a very united group of teams that were discussing with the president of the FIA about the future, and above all this regulation. That is what I can say,” he said to Autosport.

“I think that, as we said, it is a work in progress. We are working hard to find a solution and I think today with the teams we showed our unity, with a different perspective but it was important to reiterate our concept.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari Board Member Piero Ferrari has declared the Maranello-based manufacturer is willing to carry out its threat and return to sportscar racing unless the FIA changes the 2010 regulations.

The son of company founder Enzo Ferrari, the 63-year old emphasised Ferrari is not simply engaging in a “war of press releases” and has given real consideration to the prospect of returning to Le Mans.

“I strongly believe that if you look at the past of Ferrari, today’s image is born from victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and sports and GT racing,” he told the Guardian.

“We cannot forget our beginnings, and the passion of my father is still in the company. But we want racing with clear rules and starting from the same point.”

British Bobbies Get 2009 Vauxhall Insignia Sedan And Sports Tourer

vauxhall_insignia_police-car_01

While some Aussie coppers are getting about in the new Holden Commodore Sportwagon, their British comrades will be welcoming the new Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - along with the award-winning Insignia sedan - into the fleet.

The film and TV world might have gotten us used to seeing bobbies giving chase in under-powered Vauxhall Astra hatches, but the tables are set to turn, thanks to the 190kW 2.8 litre naturally-aspirated and 161kW turbo engines – not to mention the Insignia’s all-wheel-drive system. A 117kW diesel engine will be offered as well.

Astra who?

The new patrol units will include Mobile Data Terminal cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, a sleek set of blue-and-reds on the roof along with lamps for illumination.

“We believe the Insignia gives us a great opportunity for the UK Police vehicle market,” said Dick Ellam, GM UK Manager, Vehicle Conversions.

“Already we’ve had a great response from professional police drivers, who have compared its performance and handling characteristics to those of more expensive premium-badged vehicles used by some forces.

“In these tough economic times, when Police forces are spending public money, this makes the Insignia an even more appealing option.”

ACCC: ‘Drive-Away, No More To Pay’ New Car Pricing To Come Into Effect May 25

From May 25, under an enforceable ruling from the ACCC, new cars sold in Australia will have to clearly display the ‘drive-away’ price of vehicles advertised and on display.

While some manufacturers such as Hyundai, and more recently Holden, Mitsubishi and Chrylser Jeep (among others) have made ‘drive-away’ pricing a feature of their advertising, now all new car manufacturers and dealers will have to follow suit.

Under the “clarity in pricing” amendments to the Trade Practices Act, businesses must ‘prominently display’ the total price of the item offered for sale, including all components and surcharges.

This is to take effect from the 25th May, and will be overseen and enforced by the ACCC.

hyundai_getz_01

What this means is that car and motorcycle companies and dealers will not be able to advertise a vehicle – a new car or motorcycle - showing a price “plus on-road costs”.

They must now clearly show the drive-away price, which will include the ‘on-roads’ components of dealer delivery, registration, stamp duty, compulsory third party insurance and any other charges.

The ACCC ruling does not only apply to the motor industry: events ticketing will have to show booking fees; travel packages will have to show total prices including flights, transfers, and other charges; car rental firms will not now be able to advertise a price per day, but then add a surcharge for kilometres driven; and even restaurants adding surcharges to menu prices on public holidays will be affected.

While the ACCC ruling does not disallow the use of component pricing, it does however require the total price of the product (including all components) to be displayed as prominently as the price of any one component.

“The new law will not only mean consumers have accurate price information, but also that businesses have a more level playing field on which to compete when it comes to price representations,” ACCC Chairman Graeme Samuel, said.

Ford FG Falcon

For most car-buyers, the new ruling makes sense. Now, an advertised sticker price will represent the full cost of purchase.

There have been a few daft reports about this recently; one that appeared in a prominent metropolitan daily stated incorrectly that car prices would “go up” - which is simply not the case. If anything, the new ruling will exert downward pressure on drive-away prices, particularly in the price-sensitive sub-$30k buyer segments.

There will be some sticker shock though, especially for some of the more expensive marques – some of whom have long and expensive ‘menus’ of components that sit on the base price.

Cars in the $20k to $30k price range will potentially show a sticker price increase of around $3000-$4000, but more expensive purchases will show larger sticker price increases. The reality is however that buyers will not be paying more to get the car on the road.

For most car buyers, this ruling by the ACCC is likely to have strong support. Especially among those who have found their budgets stretched to breaking when adding in the ‘on-roads’ components and other charges.

holden-dealer-australia

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) is worried that there will be some difficulties applying the ruling across state borders. “They (ACCC) have left us with some difficult loose ends. There now has to be some fancy footwork to resolve the issues,” Andrew McKellar, Chief Executive of FCAI told News Ltd.

As stamp duty and other regulatory charges vary from state to state, car companies will have difficulty advertising a ‘drive-away’ price in a national promotion. And a small slip could see them in very hot water.

So, the states have their parts to play if this ruling is to work. In our view, it is high time there was harmonisation across state borders on registration, stamp duties, third party insurance and other regulatory charges.

(And incidentally, with the GST already added into the cost of the car, it is also high time the states did away with stamp duty on vehicle purchases, which sits on top of the GST and is effectively a tax on a tax.)
