Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept Revealed Ahead Of Frankfurt Motor Show

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_04

MAZDA HAS TODAY shared brand new images and details of its MX-5 Superlight concept. These join images released early last month giving the first glimpse of the concept’s rear quarter and a sketch of its interior.

Set to star for Mazda at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the concept has been developed as something of a birthday present to itself, celebrating 20 years for the popular MX-5 sports car.

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_05

The MX-5’s folding roof stand, door handles and front windscreen have been replaced by a revised rear deck with streamlined rollbars, smooth door-skins and a dash-top that melds seamlessly with the bodywork.

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_15

The MX-5 Superlight - as its name suggests - has been built as a study for advanced lightweight construction techniques.

With no windows nor the weight of a folding roof, the MX-5 Superlight concept weighs in at just 995kg.

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_18

Bilstein suspension, Eibach springs and a 30mm lower ride height should ensure a drive as dynamic as the car’s styling suggests.

Motivated by the same 1.8 litre petrol engine and five-speed transmission of the road-going MX-5, a claimed 8.9 second sprint to 100km/h shaves a second off the regular model’s time.

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_19

Four-piston fixed calipers and cross-drilled brake discs big enough to require a 50mm widening of the car’s track sit behind the same 17-inch alloy wheels of the current MX-5

Designed at Mazda’s European studios in Oberusel, Germany, the MX-5 Superlight is understood to be a commemorative project to celebrate the MX-5’s 20th anniversary this year.

2009_mazda_mx-5_superlight_21

Mazda says the MX-5 Superlight is strictly a concept-only, but as a study on improving weight reduction across the brand’s range, the Superlight may be a sign of things to come from Mazda.

2010 Honda CR-V Facelift To Debut Next Month, Arrive In Australia Next Year

2010_honda_cr-v_01

IMAGES OF HONDA’S updated CR-V have been let out ahead of the car’s Japanese launch on September 17, showing mild styling revisions are in store for the marque’s popular softroader.

The side sheetmetal and headlight shapes carry over, but the front bumper, grille and bonnet are new. The 2010 CR-V also receives new 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels.

2010_honda_cr-v_prev_01_s

For the European market, the 2010 CR-V will be offered in base SE, mid-range ES and top-spec EX variants. New technologies introduced to the CR-V include adaptive cruise control and a collision-detecting crash avoidance system, both of which are optional on the EX grade model.

Cabin fabrics and plastics are upgraded, and a new centre stack design will house the CR-V’s audio system and ventilation controls.

Improved sound deadening is claimed to lower noise from the engine and the outside environment, which, in Honda’s words, makes the 2010 CR-V “an even quieter and more relaxing car to drive”.

2010_honda_cr-v_02

The Euro-spec CR-V will offer a new 110kW 2.2 lite i-DTEC diesel engine, which produces a sizable 350Nm of torque from 2000rpm and comes with the option of a manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. All engines in the 2010 CR-V range will be Euro V emissions compliant.

Details of Australian specifications are still unknown, but Honda Australia spokesman Mark Higgins says that an updated CR-V will be arriving in Australian showrooms in the first half of next year.

“There will be a minor model change in 2010 for the CR-V,” Mr Higgins told TMR.

“It will be launched in the first half of 2010 at this stage. We don’t have all the details on the car yet, but we’ll announce them closer to the date.”

Audi To Introduce 1.2 Litre Petrol A3 And 3.0 Litre Diesel A4 At Frankfurt

2009_audi_a3_a3s_01

THE 2010 AUDI A5 SPORTBACK and its supercharged performance-oriented S5 Sportback sibling may have centre stage for Audi at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but a pair of new volume-selling models are also lined up to join them.

The A3 1.2 TFSI is one of those cars, and with its 78kW/175Nm turbocharged 1.2 litre petrol four-cylinder engine, it will also be one of Audi’s most frugal.

Paired with a six-speed manual transmission and taking power to the front wheels, the A3 1.2 TFSI offers a claimed fuel economy figure of 5.5 l/100km.

Performance figures might not be uppermost in buyers’ minds for an entry-level hatch, but Audi claims the new 1.2 litre petrol hatch will cover the 0-100km/h dash in 11.1 seconds. In A3 Sportback guise, the 1.2 TFSI hits 100km/h in 11.3 seconds.

2009_audi-a4

Joining the A3 and its larger more-powerful brethren will be a new A4 variant, powered by a 3.0 litre V6 TDI common-rail diesel engine. With the quattro all-wheel-drive system down below, the 3.0 litre diesel A4 covers the 0-100km/h in just 6.3 seconds.

Already complying with the Euro VI emissions standards scheduled for introduction in 2014, the new 3.0 litre diesel A4 achieves a fuel economy of 6.7 l/100km (6.8 for the Avant).

The new 3.0 litre TDI diesel also features a new eNOX catalytic converter, designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

The new A3 and A4 variants are expected to go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2010. Pricing and precise release dates have yet to be released by Audi Australia.

F1: Di Montezemolo Refuses To Quash Alonso Speculation

f1_ferrari_felipe-massa_01

FERRARI PRESIDENT Luca di Montezemolo has refused to quash speculation his team has secured the signature of Fernando Alonso for next season.

Alonso has long been rumoured to have signed a contract with Ferrari, with speculation indicating a deal was forged as early as last year.

And with Ferrari recently welcoming Alonso’s personal sponsor Santander on board as the team’s new major backer, it was believed the deal would be a precursor to the two-time World Champion’s eventual arrival.

Di Montezemolo added weight to rumours at the Italian Grand Prix overnight when he rejected the opportunity to dismiss claims Alonso would arrive to partner Felipe Massa in 2010.

“I never like to talk on the driver side. Whenever we take some decision we will inform you in the proper way at the right moment,” he said.

“Every year it is the same. We have two drivers, now three (Giancarlo Fisichella), plus also we are close to having Michael so we have a lot of drivers – this is not a problem for us now.”

Meanwhile, di Montezemolo said he is completely convinced Massa will be physically and mentally prepared to make his comeback at the opening round of next season.

However, he admitted the Brazilian’s stunning recovery from serious head injuries he sustained in Hungary is on the verge of miraculous.

“To be honest, yes (it is a miraculous recovery). But having said that, when I have seen him twice in hospital in Budapest I was confident for this,” he said.

“I spoke with him half an hour ago. He is back at home after the operation, which was basically plastic surgery. And I think that maybe in one week’s time he can start his personal training, although he is training a lot with video games.

“We are lucky and he is lucky because he does not remember anything of the accident, so he will be very motivated. I am sure he will be quicker than before.”

2011 Audi A8 Spied Testing In Europe

2011_audi-a8_spy-shots_03

DESPITE THE EXPECTED absence of the 2011 Audi A8 at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi recently released a cloaked teaser image of its next-generation saloon.

Today, a series of spy photos have landed, revealing a test car bearing little in the way of the usual thick cladding, but covered end-to-end in BMW-like psychedelic camouflage.

2011_audi-a8_spy-shots_04

Until now, all of the test mules spotted on the roads of Europe have been disguised under the panels of the current generation D3 A8, although with widened flares and sitting on a stretched wheelbase.

These new images offer the first look at the production A8’s proportions, if not the finer details.

2011_audi-a8_teaser_01

“The first generation was very dogmatic and product-design-like. With the second generation, the theme was ‘elegance’—softer, flowing lines,” Audi’s Chief Designer Stefan Sielaff said of the next generation A8.

The upcoming third generation will be stronger, sharper, and more precise.”

Sielaff said that the A8 will be “the first of a new styling language at Audi,” and this is most evident in the dramatic new headlight design.

The aluminium spaceframe body technology of the current A8 will carry over to the new model, which is expected to save some 150kg compared to a steel body and leading to a final kerb weight of between 1650-1900kg.

2011_audi-a8_spy-shots_05

Power is expected to come from a number of engine options, including a 186kW 3.0 V6 TDI, a 216kW 3.0 litre V6 FSI, a 253 4.2 litre V8 TDI, a 277kW 4.2 litre V8 FSI, and 5.0 litre 462kW V10 FSI for the range-topping S8 model.

Little is known about the finer details of the A8’s styling, although the earlier rendering below puts some visuals to the speculation that has followed the car since its announcement. The new preview image perhpas adds some credence to the concept below.

A single-frame grille is expected, with the trademark daytime running lights running along the re-styled headlights. A coupe-like profile is also expected, inspired by the recently revealed A5 Sportback.

Plug-In Prius PHEV And Auris Hybrid To Debut At Frankfurt Motor Show

prius-phev-concept_01

TOYOTA’S PRESENCE AT Frankfurt this month will be all about hybrids and EVs, with luxury arm Lexus revealing the LF-Ch hybrid concept and Toyota showing a plug-in Prius and the Auris (Corolla) hybrid concept.

The Prius PHEV plug-in - previously seen undergoing testing on the second-generation Prius platform - will be revealed at Frankfurt, and the Japanese manufacturer has today offered some technical insight on its newest eco-friendly car.

toyota-prius-phev_03

Armed with a lithium-ion battery pack, the Prius PHEV will utilise the regular model’s hybrid synergy drive, in an upgraded form that allows the Prius to function in electric-only mode for speeds up to 100km/h over distances reaching 20km.

Toyota claims the car will reach 100km/h from a standing start in electric-only mode, but no numbers have been offered on how long that trip will take.

Carbon emissions are rated at just 60g/km, making it one of the cleanest petrol-electric hybrids yet developed.

Toyota has not revealed the charging capacity of the Prius PHEV’s lithium-ion battery, but it promises a 1.5 hour charge via a 230V power outlet.

The world number one carmaker plans to build 500 Prius PHEV cars from later this year, which it will lease to corporate and government fleets in Japan, Europe and the United States.

Auris Hybrid

The Japanese manufacturer has announced plans to manufacture a full hybrid version of its Auris small car - sold locally as the Corolla - in the United Kingdom, for sale across Europe.

Production of the Toyota’s first European-built hybrid will commence in mid-2010, with technical details still unknown.

auris-hsd-hybrid_concept_01

A variant of the new Prius’s 1.8 litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and Hybrid Synergy Drive system are tipped to be destined for the Auris Hybrid’s engine bay, however it would not be entirely surprising if the 1.5 litre petrol-electric powerplant of the second-gen Prius was taken out of retirement for the Auris.

Exports to Australia are unlikely, with Toyota Australia’s public relations manager Mike Breen telling TMR that “there is no current plan to introduce the Auris (Corolla) hybrid to the Australian market”.

However there is a faint glimmer of hope, with Breen saying that, “as with all new models, it is under study”.

2010 Rolls Royce Ghost Details, Images, Video And Australian Pricing Announced

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_14

ROLLS ROYCE, after months of spy photos, teaser images and videos, revealed the 2010 Rolls Royce Ghost in all its extravagant glory earlier this week.

Today, the British luxury marque’s Australian arm announced that pricing for the Ghost will start from $695,000. Official details for the local model will be revealed in November, ahead of an April 2010 production date.

Rolls Royce in Australia is expecting an allocation of 40 cars, and already around 24 expressions of interest have been taken.

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_09

The British luxury marque recently confirmed that the big V12 under the bonnet of the new Ghost will develop a sinfully monstrous 420kW and 780Nm of torque. This will make the new model – known in its earlier concept form as the 200EX - even more powerful than its larger and more expensive sibling, the Phantom.

An astonishing 550Nm of torque is available from as low as 1000rpm, climbing to the full 780Nm at just 1500rpm.

Despite weighing in at 2360kg, Rolls Royce claims the Ghost will rocket to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, up to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

Keeping power delivery smooth, the big V12 has been paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Rolls Royce also previously revealed details of the Ghost’s clever new chassis technology, which is designed to endow the Ghost with Rolls’ classic quality of ‘waftability’ while still providing impressive handling dynamics.

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_15

“A Rolls-Royce should be effortless in every way: the way it accelerates, brakes and handles,” Rolls-Royce Engineering Director Helmut Riedl said.

“It should do all of these functions with apparent ease regardless of the complex mechanicals that are working out of sight of the driver and passengers. The driver simply has to point the car in the preferred direction of travel and press the accelerator.”

To accomplish this, Rolls Royce has fitted the Ghost with multi-link independent suspension both front and rear, with aluminium links reducing unsprung weight and improving suspension response.

Rather than conventional coiled steel springs, the Ghost rides atop four electronically-controlled airbags, with variable damping and adjustable ride height also thrown in.

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_07

The Ghost’s onboard sensors can detect the slightest change in weight distribution, and will adjust the car’s attitude and damping to suit. The system is so sensitive in fact that it can determine whether a passenger has moved from one side of the car to the other.

Ride height can also be raised or lowered by up to 25mm in order to aid entry or egress, or to prevent the Ghost’s expensive underbelly from getting scraped when travelling over rough ground.

Unlike its BMW 7 Series platform sibling, the Ghost uses a steel monocoque frame, increasing strength and allowing for a greater interior space and stretched-out luxury.

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_05

Active Roll Stabilisation keeps the hefty limousine’s body in check through the corners, while the air suspension provides a soft, supple ride.

“The individual technologies determining handling and safety work together controlled by dual Integrated Chassis Management systems meaning that even under vigorous testing the Ghost remains perfectly poised,” Mr Riedl said.

“We are very proud of our engineering team’s achievements with [the] Ghost. The balance of refinement and dynamic ability is astonishing.”

Inside, where a Rolls Royce must be at its absolute best, Teflon-coated umbrellas rest in door-mounted enclosures and drum-dyed leather (versus the polyurethane-painted leather of most other cars) covers virtually every surface.

Lounge-like seating with internal massage technology and cooling features among the options, as does a coolbox with specially-designed champagne flutes.

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_20

The 600w USB and iPod-ready stereo is complemented by no less than 16 speakers, with two floor-mounted subwoofers managing the bass.

Speaking of the 200EX concept that lead to the production Ghost we see here, Rolls Royce CEO Tom Purves said: “200EX is a modern execution of timeless Rolls-Royce elegance, breaking with some areas of tradition but retaining the core values that make our marque unique.”

“We expect the more informal design to broaden the appeal of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, attracting people who appreciate its fusion of refinement, new technology and contemporary style.”

2010_rolls-royce_ghost_17

Rolls Royce describes the Ghost as a “vision of simplicity, building on the core values of the brand”. There will likely be very few of us who will ever put vision to the test.
